On Saturday, January 30th, the Swan club travelled to Whittlesey for the Mendi Wisbech Trophy Gala.  The team was in competition with Dereham, St. Neots, Wisbech, March and West Norfolk, and by the end of the evening Swan finished in 2nd place, 21 points behind Dereham, and well clear of the other four clubs.

It appears already that Swan and Dereham are going to continue their close battles of 2009 which bodes well for both clubs, particularly with the County Championships and the Norfolk Junior League close at hand.

How did Swan arrive at this excellent result?  Simply, if that is the right word, by consistency throughout plus a significant number of excellent personal performances.  From the 40 individual swims 21 were PB's, and by large amounts in many cases.  Witness Ellie Ronen, 4 seconds improvement in the 100m IM;  Nathan Mitchell, 7 seconds in the same event; and Michael Abel, 6 seconds in the 100m Freestyle, to give just three examples.

David Lambert won the 100m Open Fly;  Phil Davis (13/u) 100m Backstroke; Jake Staff (15/u) 100m Backstroke;  Gussie Welsh (11/u) 50m Backstroke;  Ellie Ronen (11/u) 100m IM;  Isabella Carr (11/u) 50m Fly and Charlie Grisley (11/u)50m Fly.  These winners were well supported by fifteen 2nd places, ten 3rds and six 4ths.

The relays produced their customary excellent results with four wins, two seconds and two thirds.  The winning teams were;  Sophie Foster, Kate Brighten, Laura Marzolini and Lily Jones (15/u) 4x50m FC ;  Cloudy Majtenyi-Hill, Kia Murphy, Georgina Matthews and Laura Marzolini (13/u) 4x25m FC;  Isabella Carr, Brooklyn Cheal-Ferris, Gussie Welsh and Ellie Ronen (11/u) 4x25m FC; and Charlie Grisley, Niall Cole, Joseph Dann and Nathan Mitchell (11/u) 4x25m FC.  The second place teams were:  Michael Abel, Jake Staff, Daryn Park and Rob Davis (15/u) 4x50m FC;  Fraser Ellis, Phil Davis, Alex Storey and Thomas Matthews (13/u) 4x25m FC;  and the two third place teams were:  Emma Wright, Sophie Foster, Lily Jones and Amanda Bedder (open) 4x50m FC;  and Richard Belton, Daryn Park, Matt Allen and David Lambert (open) 4x50m FC.

The Swan Swimmer of the Gala was Phil Davis for his victory in the 13/u 100m Backstroke in which he also reduced his PB time by over 1.5 seconds.  Well done Phil, and well done everybody who participated and made possible such an fine team performance!
